How it works
We mastered the sky, all of it.
Most astrology you have met is one planet in one of twelve signs: a sun-sign paragraph written for eight billion people at once. That is not what this is. Astrology is really four distinct arts, each answering a different kind of question, and Astro Assist computes all four on a real ephemeris, with every verdict showing its work. This page is the whole machine, opened up. Nothing here is a pretty picture of the cosmos. It is mathematics you can check against any ephemeris on Earth.
A sun-sign app reads one planet in one of twelve signs: a hundred and forty-four horoscopes for the whole of humanity. The real art is four separate disciplines, each with its own rules, each answering a different shape of question. We built all four, and they share one deterministic engine, so the chart that knows you also times your decisions, answers your questions, and reads your year.
Natal
Who you were born to be.
Your birth chart, erected from the real sky of your birth moment and the exact ground you were born on, and sharpest when your birth time is known.
- ✶Ten bodies, Sun through Pluto, on a real ephemeris
- ✶Your Ascendant and Midheaven by spherical trigonometry
- ✶The full Ptolemaic dignity of every classical planet, degree by degree
- ✶The Lots of Fortune, Spirit and Eros, reversed correctly by sect
- ✶Day chart or night chart, from the Sun's true altitude at your birth
- ✶Declination, and the planets born out of bounds
- ✶Your single strongest planet, and the one you work for all your life
Electional
The day, and the hour, to act.
Tell it what you are about to do, and it scans months of sky to find when the heavens favor it.
- ✶Every day and chosen hour scored from 0 to 100, months ahead
- ✶The planet ruling your matter, weighed in live condition: dignity, angularity, combustion, retrograde
- ✶The void-of-course Moon, found to the minute
- ✶The true planetary day and hour, from sunrise at your coordinates
- ✶Sect: which benefic helps and which malefic bites, on that day
- ✶Eclipse shadows and fixed-star contacts, called out by name
- ✶Every candidate weighed against your own birth chart
Horary
Will it come to pass?
Ask a real yes-or-no question and the chart of the moment you asked is judged by the old rules.
- ✶The two significators, drawn by whole sign from your question
- ✶Four ways an answer can perfect: direct aspect, translation of light, collection of light, or the Moon herself carrying it
- ✶Reception by domicile and exaltation, mutual or one-sided: who actually wants it
- ✶The considerations before judgment, asking whether the chart is even fit to read
- ✶Combustion, the void Moon, and an honest no when the sky says no
- ✶A timing estimate read from the mode of the sign
Predictive
What the year holds.
The clock of your life, turned forward: the season you are in, and the exact days the slow planets find you.
- ✶Annual profections and your Lord of the Year, with his live condition
- ✶Your solar return, solved to a hundredth of a degree
- ✶The exact dates the slow planets touch your Sun, Moon and Ascendant
- ✶Every pass of every retrograde, pinned by root-finding, not estimated
Every one of those four arts stands on the same ground: genuine astronomical computation, the kind professional software uses. Before a single rule is applied, the sky is known.
A real ephemeris
Positions come from a modern analytical ephemeris, VSOP87-class planetary theory and a high-precision lunar model, aberration corrected, accurate to about an arcminute. A planet moves an arcminute in under a minute of clock time, far finer than anything that changes an interpretation. The app does no hand-waving astronomy: it reads the same sky professional software does.
Root-finding, not lookup tables
The moments that matter are solved, not approximated. The instant the Moon changes sign, the day a transit goes exact, your solar return: each is found by bisection or Newton iteration to far below a second of arc. A retrograde planet that crosses your Sun three times is logged three times, each pass pinned to its real date.
Your real sky, your real ground
True sunrise and sunset for your exact coordinates set the planetary hours. Historical timezones, with daylight saving and old rule changes resolved, place your birth moment correctly. The chart is yours, computed where you actually stand, not a generic grid.
Deterministic, and it shows its work
There is no random number anywhere in this product, and no AI ever invents a planetary position. The same question, moment and place always produce the same answer, and every verdict lists the exact factors that produced it, point by point. If we cannot compute it, we do not say it.
On that foundation we apply the working doctrine of traditional astrology, the rules the old masters actually practiced and the books astrologers still train on. Not a flavor of it. The machinery itself.
The complete dignity ladder
Not just rulership. All five rungs of the Ptolemaic ladder for every classical planet: domicile and exaltation, triplicity by element, the sixty Egyptian term-bounds and all thirty-six Chaldean faces, summed degree by degree into a strength score with detriment and fall as the debts. This is the precise measure of a planet's power that real astrology is built on, and almost no consumer app computes it at all.
Sect, day and night
Whether a chart belongs to the Sun or to the stars, computed from the Sun's true altitude above your horizon. By day Jupiter helps most and Mars bites hardest; by night Venus and Saturn trade those roles. It quietly reshapes a reading, and you will not find it in a horoscope app.
The void-of-course Moon
The stretch after the Moon's last exact aspect, before she changes signs, when the old rule says nothing started will come to much. We scan her whole sign passage against the visible planets to find the window, and soften the verdict honestly when you are inside it.
The go-between: translation and collection
When the two parties of a question do not meet directly, a third planet can carry the light between them, or gather both. We test for translation and collection of light explicitly, the old doctrine of the messenger and the mediator, before we ever call a matter dead.
The Lots, reversed by sect
The ancient Arabic Parts, Fortune, Spirit and Eros, computed with the sect-reversed formulas, Ascendant plus Moon minus Sun by day and mirrored by night, then placed in your houses. The detail most apps get backward, or skip.
Significators, in real condition
Every matter has a ruling planet and every action a natural agent. Ask about money and we weigh Venus; about a signature and we weigh Saturn, not in the abstract but in its live state that day: dignified or debilitated, angular or hidden, free or combust the Sun.
Fixed stars and eclipses
The great named stars, Regulus, Spica, Algol, Antares and their kin, checked against the Moon and your matter's ruler. Every solar and lunar eclipse found by real eclipse search, because the tradition says never to begin a great thing in an eclipse's shadow.
Two charts, woven together
Synastry that refuses the single fake percentage. Every meaningful contact between two birth charts is weighed on the traditional tables into four honest threads, attraction, harmony, endurance and conversation, with the exact degrees shown behind each.
William Lilly, Christian Astrology (1647). The foundational English text of horary judgment: significators, perfection, the considerations before judgment, the void-of-course Moon.
John Frawley, The Horary Textbook. The clearest modern statement of traditional horary method, including reception as the measure of willingness and desire.
Claudius Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos. The classical source of the dignity tables and aspect doctrine the engine implements.
Dorotheus and the Hellenistic tradition. Whole-sign houses, the twelve topical houses as a complete map of life, planetary days and hours, the doctrine of sect, annual profections and the Lots, recovered in modern translations of Valens and his peers.
Guido Bonatti, Liber Astronomiae. Medieval electional and horary doctrine, including the treatment of the Moon as the carrier of every election.
Nothing is hidden behind a number. Every electional verdict starts at a neutral 55 and earns or loses points from named factors, and the same factors you see under the score are the ones that moved it. A real example, scored the way the engine does it:
Worked example · “sign the partnership agreement”
- Neutral starting point55
- ▲ Waxing Moon, the classic tide for things meant to grow+10
- ▲ Venus, ruler of partnership, exalted and free+9
- ▲ Day of Venus: theme and time agree+6
- ▲ Jupiter trine the Moon, applying+7
- ▼ Saturn, agent of signatures, in fall and working uphill−4
- ▼ Mercury retrograde: contracts get revisited−15
Verdict for this moment68
A decent day pulled down by a retrograde Mercury. The engine keeps scanning and usually finds a cleaner one nearby. Every factor above appears in the app exactly like this, with its reasoning spelled out.
Here is how you know it is not a smokescreen: a smokescreen never tells you its limits. Astrologers have argued about the details for two thousand years, and an honest engine does not pretend the arguments are settled. Where the tradition splits, or where we chose to simplify, we pick one documented convention, apply it consistently, and tell you exactly what it is.
Whole-sign houses
We use whole-sign houses everywhere, the oldest and most reproducible system, where each thirty-degree sign is one house. We compute your exact Ascendant and Midheaven to the arcminute, and we tell you we do not slice the houses by Placidus. We would rather be consistent and say so than mix systems silently.
The tropical zodiac, classical planets
Tropical signs, and essential dignity scored for the seven visible planets the tradition actually built its rules on. The modern outers are computed and shown in your chart; they simply do not carry domicile or rulership, because the classical doctrine did not give them any.
Triplicity, simplified
We score triplicity with one lord per element rather than the full day-night-participating triad. It is a deliberate simplification we are naming here, not hiding, and it moves a dignity score by at most a few points.
The scoring weights are ours
Every electional verdict starts at a neutral 55 and earns or loses named points. The factors are the tradition's; the exact point values are our considered, conservative weighting, tuned by hand and shown in full under every score, not calibrated against outcome data we do not have. We show you the arithmetic so you can disagree with it.
Fixed stars, dated to now
The named stars are placed where they sit in our own era and drift about a degree a lifetime. They are honest today and for years either side, and we will move them forward as the sky does.
Compatibility honesty
Synastry apps love a single big percentage. We refuse: two people are not one number. You get four separate threads with the exact contacts behind each, because that is what the tradition actually supports.
Astrology is a tradition of meaning, not a laboratory science, and we will not dress it up as one. Astro Assist computes the sky with real precision and applies the classical rules with care, and what you do with the reading remains yours. We do not predict fixed fates. We do not replace lawyers, doctors, advisors or your own judgment, and the law and your duties always outrank the stars. We will not sell fear, we will not time harm for anyone, and a person who arrives in a dark hour is pointed to real human help, never to a chart. What we promise is narrower and, we think, far more valuable than certainty: real mathematics, the tradition faithfully applied, every verdict showing its work, and an honest voice about what a sky can and cannot tell you.
The engine ships with an audit harness, dozens of checks and growing, run against the production code itself. The dignity tables are verified against the classical texts, Jupiter exalted in Cancer, Saturn fallen in Aries, and the rest. Computed positions are checked against the known sky. The Lot formulas reverse correctly by sect. The solar return lands within a hundredth of a degree. The eclipse search surfaces the real eclipses around any date you check. The safety screen is tested against both harmful questions and innocent idioms. And the live sky shown across the app, down to the ticker on the front page, is the same computation, so you can hold us against any ephemeris or astronomy app you already trust, any day, for free.
